About This Stone
Star Sapphire carries the most mysterious optical phenomenon in the sapphire family. Microscopic needle-like rutile inclusions reflect light into a crisp six-rayed star across its surface, an effect called asterism. Navigators and travelers revered it as a compass of destiny that kept them from losing their way, and in medieval Europe its three crossing rays were read as faith, hope and destiny, making it a favorite of royalty and clergy.
Star Sapphire: The Eternal Star Shaped by Light
1. Introduction & History
Star Sapphire holds the most mysterious phenomenon in the sapphire family. Fine needle-like rutile inclusions arranged inside the stone reflect light into a precise six-rayed star across its surface. Since antiquity, navigators and travelers revered it as a 'compass of destiny' and a good-luck charm that, like the North Star, kept them from losing their way.
In medieval Europe, that singular starlight was believed to symbolize faith, hope and destiny, making it a favorite of royalty and clergy alike. In the East especially, the three crossing rays were read as faith, hope and destiny, and the stone was handled as a treasure.
2. Symbolism & Energy
