About This Stone

Amber is not a mineral but fossilized tree resin formed over tens of millions of years. Ancient Greeks observed that rubbing Amber generated static electricity, calling it 'elektron'—the origin of the modern word 'electricity.' In Eastern traditions, Amber was believed to embody the spirit of a tiger transformed into a gemstone, serving as a powerful talisman of protection, luck, and vitality.

01. Introduction and History

Amber is not a mineral but an organic gem formed when the resin of ancient trees, such as pine, hardened over tens of millions of years. Ancient Greeks believed amber was a "fragment of the sun" after noticing that rubbing it produced static electricity, and the Greek word for amber, "Elektron," became the root of the modern word "electricity."

In East Asia, it was believed that a tiger's spirit entered the earth after death and became this gem — giving it its Korean name, which literally means "tiger amber" — and it was regarded as a precious stone that warded off bad energy and brought good fortune. In Roman times, a small piece of amber was valued as highly as a healthy slave.

02. Symbolism and Energy

Amber symbolizes not a cold stone but "warm life energy." Having condensed the earth's energy over a long span of time, it is said to act as a powerful purifier — absorbing negative energy that has built up in the body and mind and converting it into positive vitality.

  • Key benefits: said to help relieve stress, support immune function, and provide emotional warmth.
  • Energy direction: said to help relax a tense mind and ease feelings of depression. It is also said to awaken inner wisdom for clearer decision-making, especially when hesitating.
  • Chakra connection: the Sacral Chakra and Solar Plexus Chakra. Said to awaken creativity and provide energy that helps manage physical pain or discomfort.

03. Color and Quality

Amber's value depends on its characteristic transparency and the traces of nature preserved within it.

  • Visual characteristics: ranges from honey-sweet yellow to deep whiskey tones. It occasionally contains fossilized ancient plant leaves or insects, which carry very high value both academically and in terms of rarity.
  • Value assessment: value rises with fewer internal flaws and higher transparency, or, conversely, with a beautifully diffused, dreamlike cloudy pattern (milky amber). A vivid, untreated natural color is also prized.

04. Fortune Information

  • Birthstone: used as a secondary birthstone for November, popular as a gift wishing for longevity and health.
  • Zodiac: enhances the bright, sociable energy of Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) and Leo (Jul 23 – Aug 22).
  • Five Elements compatibility: carries the warm energy of Earth and Fire. Said to offer stabilizing earth energy to those who run cold and need better circulation, or those who tire easily due to a sensitive temperament.

05. Curation

  • Pairs well with:
    • + Lapis Lazuli: amber's warmth meets lapis's cool wisdom, creating a balance of reason and emotion.
    • + Moss Agate: two stones that share a plant-like energy come together to maximize natural healing and bring psychological peace.
  • Recommended use: its light weight makes it good for long bracelets or necklaces. Worn directly against the skin, body heat is said to activate amber's fine active compounds, delivering energy believed to benefit health.

06. Care Guide

Amber is among the softest and most delicate of gemstones, so it needs special care in handling.

  • Cleaning: rinse gently with lukewarm water and a very mild soap solution, then dry immediately with a soft cloth.
  • Cleansing: it is very sensitive to heat, so avoid direct sunlight. A brief rinse under running water, or placing it next to a plant to recharge with nature's life energy, works best.
  • Cautions: its very low hardness means it scratches easily against other gems or metal. Contact with chemicals such as perfume, spray, or acetone can cloud or dissolve the surface, so put it on last, after finishing your makeup.
